Human Rights Groups Protest, Demanding the Release of Human Rights Lawyer Lu Siwei

On August 7, 2023, several human rights groups, including the UK Headquarters of China Democracy Party, protested in front of the Laotian Embassy in the UK, demanding the immediate release of Chinese human rights lawyer Lu Siwei, who had been taken away and faced forced repatriation in Laos.

Lu Siwei was arrested in Laos on July 28 while en route to Thailand, which sparked strong reactions from international human rights organizations and groups concerned with Chinese human rights. Lu Siwei had originally planned to travel through Laos to reunite with his family in the United States via Thailand. He had represented cases of political dissidents, including the “12 Hong Kongers” case in 2020. In 2021, Lu Siwei was accused of making online statements “endangering national security,” leading to the revocation of his lawyer’s license. He was subsequently attacked and banned from leaving the country.

Representatives from the Laotian Embassy in the UK received a letter signed by 85 human rights organizations. Demonstrators outside the Laotian Embassy chanted slogans like “FREE LU SIWEI” to express their demands. Members of the UK Headquarters of China Democracy Party who participated in the protest stated that the Laotian government should not become an accomplice to the Chinese government. They urged the Laotian government to abide by international law, fulfill international human rights obligations, immediately halt all procedures related to repatriating lawyer Lu Siwei, and release him. Laos is a signatory to the United Nations Convention against Torture and has an obligation not to deport anyone to a country where they may be at risk of torture.
