Twin-City Voices Against Oppression in the Summer Heat: China Democracy Party UK Headquarters Protests the CCP’s New “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress”
[London & Manchester] At 1:00 p.m. on 15 August 2026, the United Kingdom experienced exceptionally high temperatures, setting a new annual heat record. Yet the intense summer heat did not deter overseas democracy activists from continuing their campaign for human rights and political freedom. On the same day, members of the China Democracy Party UK Headquarters staged coordinated protests outside the Chinese Embassy in London and the Chinese Consulate-General in Manchester, strongly opposing the Chinese Communist Party’s nationwide implementation of the so-called Law of the People’s Republic of China on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress (hereinafter referred to as the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress).
Spanning two major British cities, the demonstration was not only a strong condemnation of what protesters described as the CCP’s policy of cultural assimilation and erosion of ethnic diversity under the banner of “unity”, but also a demonstration of the resilience of the overseas democracy movement in the face of both political challenges and extreme weather conditions.
Voices of Protest in Two Cities Amid the Heatwave
At midday on 15 August, temperatures in central London soared under a blazing sun, with heat rising from the asphalt. Outside the Chinese Embassy, dozens of members of the China Democracy Party UK Headquarters held bilingual Chinese and English banners bearing messages such as “Oppose the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress” and “Protect Cultural Diversity”, chanting slogans that attracted the attention of numerous pedestrians and tourists.
Meanwhile, several hundred miles to the north, demonstrators gathered outside the Chinese Consulate-General in Manchester, chanting the same slogans in a coordinated display of solidarity. Protesters in both cities stood united despite the intense heat.
Ignoring the sweat pouring down their faces, participants continued to hold their banners high. One demonstrator remarked:
“No matter how hot the weather is, it is not as intense as our commitment to democracy and freedom. No matter how harsh the CCP’s authoritarian rule may be, it cannot melt our determination to resist.”
Condemning the Assimilation Law and Defending Cultural Diversity
At the London protest, Wang Yunpu, Chair of the Beijing Branch of the China Democracy Party and Vice-Chair of the China Democracy Party European Headquarters, delivered a passionate speech. He argued that although the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress claims to promote “unity” and “progress”, it in fact institutionalises authoritarian control through legislation by enforcing cultural assimilation and restricting the languages, religions and cultural identities of ethnic minorities including Tibetans, Uyghurs and Mongolians. He further alleged that the legislation seeks to intimidate overseas dissidents through transnational repression.
Wang Weijin, Chief Commander of Street Activities for the China Democracy Party UK Headquarters, stated in his speech:
“The CCP believes that a carefully packaged legal narrative can erase the unique cultures and fundamental rights of different ethnic groups. They have built walls and silenced voices within China, but here on free soil overseas we must continue speaking for those who are oppressed and expose the reality behind what they call ‘unity’ but what is, in fact, forced assimilation.”
He further described the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress as another instrument through which authoritarian power extends into every corner of society, adding that the China Democracy Party would continue exposing what it considers to be the law’s anti-human-rights nature on the international stage.
Public Response: From Curiosity to Support
Despite the unusually high temperatures in London, the demonstrations outside the Chinese Embassy drew considerable attention from local residents, international visitors, and members of Middle Eastern and Tibetan communities.
Many passers-by expressed admiration for the determination shown by demonstrators standing in the sun for hours. After learning about the purpose of the protest, a young teacher from London commented:
“On such an exceptionally hot day, it’s moving to see people standing here for hours in support of the human rights and cultural survival of others. If this new law is indeed being used to suppress minority communities and dissenting voices, then the international community should not remain silent.”
In Manchester, several local residents passing the Chinese Consulate-General stopped to wave at the demonstrators and shouted “Freedom for China!”, creating an atmosphere of encouragement and solidarity.
Standing Firm Until Freedom Prevails
From the formal establishment of the China Democracy Party European Headquarters in London on 10 May 2026 to the coordinated protests across London and Manchester on 15 August against the CCP’s new legislation, the organisational capacity and coordination of the China Democracy Party in Europe have continued to develop.
As the protest declaration concluded, neither extreme weather nor authoritarian pressure can prevent members of the China Democracy Party from continuing their efforts to promote constitutional democracy. The demonstrations in London and Manchester were presented not only as a response to what participants described as the CCP’s attempts at cultural assimilation and transnational influence, but also as a message to the wider world:
“As long as authoritarianism continues, resistance will not end. Those who are oppressed will one day regain their freedom and dignity.”
