Echoes of a Lone Hero: China Democracy Party European and UK Headquarters Hold Protest Outside the Chinese Embassy in the UK Ahead of the Fourth Anniversary of the Sitong Bridge Protest
[London] On 1 October 2026, as the Chinese Communist Party marked the anniversary of the establishment of its regime, a solemn and austere atmosphere prevailed simultaneously at Portland Place in London and outside the Chinese Consulate-General in Manchester. Members of the China Democracy Party European Headquarters and UK Headquarters, together with a number of dissidents living in exile overseas, coordinated actions in the north and south of England, staging large-scale simultaneous protests directly opposite the Chinese Embassy in London and the Chinese Consulate-General in Manchester.
The demonstration was held in advance of the forthcoming fourth anniversary of the Sitong Bridge Protest, paying tribute to Peng Lifa, also known online as Peng Zaizhou, who four years ago broke through the darkness from Beijing’s Sitong Bridge and issued a cry that resonated with the times. Protesters also made a strong appeal to the Beijing authorities: immediately release Peng Lifa and all prisoners of conscience, and begin comprehensive constitutional and democratic reform. They also demanded the immediate release of seven China Democracy Party members, including Wang Shi, Vice-Chair and Secretary-General of the Beijing Branch of the China Democracy Party, who were sentenced in March this year.
A Lone Column of Smoke Beneath the Open Sky: Banners and Slogans Recreate the “Cry of Sitong Bridge”
The rally officially began at 2:00 p.m. Outside the embassy, large banners and placards filled the area. In front of the Chinese Embassy in London, party members solemnly unfurled a huge white banner with red lettering reproducing the original slogans from the Sitong Bridge protest:
“We want food, not Covid tests; freedom, not lockdowns; dignity, not lies; elections, not leaders; citizens, not slaves.”
These words, which shocked audiences around the world in October 2022, once again fluttered in the London autumn breeze.
Protesters chanted slogans including “Release Peng Lifa!”, “End one-party dictatorship!”, and “Restore human rights and freedom to the Chinese people!” Their voices carried across Portland Place towards the tightly closed gates of the embassy.
North and South in Unison: Persistence and Protest Outside the Manchester Consulate
At the same time as the major rally in London, members of the China Democracy Party gathered outside the Chinese Consulate-General in Manchester in northern England, forming a parallel protest front.
Outside the Manchester consulate, party members held placards reading “Release Peng Lifa” and “Oppose CCP Dictatorship”, breaking the silence around the consulate with loud chants.
The organiser of the Manchester rally said that speaking out in front of the consulate on this particular day was intended both to support the main gathering in London and to convey to Chinese communities in the Midlands and northern Britain a determination to uphold democratic values.
The simultaneous protests in London and Manchester demonstrated what organisers described as the growing reach and coordination of the overseas Chinese democracy movement in the United Kingdom.
A Stirring Rally: A Democratic Declaration Across Time and Distance
Representatives of the China Democracy Party European Headquarters and UK Headquarters delivered speeches at the event, reviewing the historical significance behind Peng Lifa’s individual act of courage and its subsequent influence on the White Paper Movement and the wider global Chinese democracy movement.
Wang Yunpu, Chair of the Beijing Branch of the China Democracy Party and Vice-Chair of the China Democracy Party European Headquarters, spoke at the rally and strongly demanded that the Beijing authorities immediately release the seven members of the China Democracy Party Beijing Branch, including Vice-Chair and Secretary-General Wang Shi, who were sentenced behind closed doors by Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court on charges of “subversion of state power” on 30 and 31 March 2026.
He described the establishment of the China Democracy Party as a continuation of the “spirit of resistance demonstrated at Beijing’s Sitong Bridge.”
A representative of the China Democracy Party stated at the rally:
“Four years ago, Mr Peng Lifa, driven into desperate circumstances, risked everything on Sitong Bridge. Through billowing smoke and repeated cries, he pierced the suffocating silence under totalitarian rule. He was not a reckless lone man, but the embodiment of the anger felt by countless Chinese people whose dignity had been trampled upon.
“Over the past four years, that flame has never been extinguished. It spread during the White Paper Movement and continues to burn in the hearts of freedom-loving Chinese people around the world.
“In October 2025, the Beijing Branch of the China Democracy Party announced its establishment near Beijing’s Sitong Bridge and publicly read out its provisional party constitution, advocating the principles of ‘openness, rationality, peace and non-violence’, and calling for China to move towards freedom, democracy and the rule of law.”
Participants emphasised that Peng Lifa remains subjected to enforced disappearance and harsh detention, while his family has also allegedly been placed under strict surveillance and persecution. They described such treatment of an individual’s free will as a serious affront to the basic standards of human civilisation.
Passing the Flame Forward: From Sitong Bridge to Every Corner of the World
A number of young party members and exiled advocates of freedom took turns speaking at the rally.
One young participant said that the slogans shouted from Sitong Bridge had struck society like gunfire, breaking through a widespread sense of learned helplessness and awakening an entire generation to questions of civic responsibility and political rights.
In concluding remarks, a representative of the China Democracy Party European Headquarters called on the international community to maintain close attention to the human rights situation in China and not to neglect those suffering under authoritarian rule because of geopolitical considerations.
The protest was not only presented as a solemn demonstration on what participants called a “Day of National Mourning”, but also as a continuation of the spirit of the Sitong Bridge protest.
As long as Peng Lifa has not regained his freedom, and as long as constitutional government and democracy have not yet arrived in China, participants declared that the voices of freedom in London, Manchester and around the world will not fall silent.
